Our Story

About Hill Top

Hill Top first opened its doors in 1993 as a pick-your-own berry farm, and, in 1998, went on to become the fifty-first winery to open in Virginia. Aptly perched on the top of a hill in the picturesque Rockfish River Valley, Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery is surrounded by the tree-covered peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The winery offers spectacular views of Pilot Mountain, Three Ridges, and the snowy ski slopes of Wintergreen. Beyond scenic views, Hill Top provides visitors with the unique opportunity to taste the “true to the fruit” wines and authentic and historical honey meads, which are its signature offerings. Handcrafted in small batches by second-generation owners Gregory and Kimberly Pugh, all 32 varieties of fruit wines and meads are made and bottled on the farm and sealed with a natural cork.

True to the Fruit Wines in Nellysford, Virginia

What’s True to the Fruit Wine?

These delicious “other than grape” wines are made from various fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, plums, apples, peaches, elderberries, cantaloupes, and many others. They contain no grapes and range in profile from dry to sweet. The goal at Hill Top is to honor and preserve the fruit’s natural flavor well enough that you can identify each fruit when you taste the wine. Hill Top does include grapes in its Madison Sangria, which is made from peaches, concord grapes, and other fermented fruits.

More About Honey Mead

Hill Top specializes in authentic honey mead, an ancient alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey. Join us for a tasting and step back in time as you savor the drink of ancient civilizations while learning about the history of each mead and how we recreate them. Hill Top offers Viking-style meads, a Cyser mead once enjoyed by the Anglo Saxons, a Roman-style Pyment mead, along with many others from the corners of the ancient world. Experience the traditional drinks long associated with love, poetry, sex, and religion held in high esteem by many of our ancestors!
